Quote of the Month
“I usually work in a direction until I know how to do it, then I stop. At the time that I am bored or understand — I use those words interchangeably — another appetite has formed. A lot of people try to think up ideas. I’m not one. I’d rather accept the irresistible possibilities of what I can’t ignore.” —Robert Rauschenberg

Archipelago Books: This press specializes in translating wonderful and unknown contemporary writers. I love their books because every one is beautifully made -- you feel like each is a treasure when you hold it. Plus, Archipelago was started by a friend of mine whom I worked with at Seven Stories Press many summers ago.
Baptiste Power Yoga: My old studio in Boston, and the foundation of my first yoga years, although its significance extends far beyond that...
Community Music Works: Many of you have heard this story before...I first read about the Providence String Quartet and the beginning of their community music program when I was in high school. Their success (and they are now fabulously, inspiringly successful) has planted many seeds and I have continued to follow their progress all these years since.
Cool Running: For those of us obsessed with running...running info, races, training schedules, news.
Culinate.com: This is probably my favorite foodie website — it's not just a great site for recipes and cooking tips, but also for cookers and eaters who are asking questions about what they are eating (and/or cooking) and why. The site addresses equally the relationship of our food choices to the environment, our health, and to society. Plus it is Beautifully designed. AND it does have some good recipes, too.
Curly Girl Designs: Just because they are fun and funny.
Design Your Life: If you want to be challenged in how you think about design, if you want it to teach you to look at your world and the things with a fresh perspective, if you want to “use design to recognize the forms of pleasure and productivity hiding in the messes of daily life,” then this is your site. Provocative, brilliant, challenging...everyone should read it.
New York Road Runners: If you are into NY racing...
Open Classes at Yale: Whether you didn't entirely pay attention the first time around or never set foot in the language-lab-that-looks-like-a-castle as a Yalie, several Amazing professors are now offering lectures from their most popular classes as streaming downloads. YES, I am a nerd. but, seriously, these are fantastic.
Runner's World: The ultimate everything-is-here running website.
Sole Responsibility: Donate your old running shoes!
Story People: I love these. I might even be a little bit obsessed with them. ok, a lot obsessed. but quirky and honest and so real. and so many of them make me laugh; who couldn't use more of that each day?
Sustainable Table: Another great site celebrating sustainable eating and healthy relationships between food and communities. It's a little more limited than Culinate, but still offers plenty of good information and inspiration for sustainable living.
Urban Bird Design: I LOVE the work of Jennifer Doheny, the artist behind urban bird designs. She mostly has only cards and prints on this site (which is also beautiful), but I love the elegance of her work and looking at it periodically makes me happy.
Urban Plant Research: If you like good photography, good writing, plants, and being challenged about how you look at the way plants act and interact in your daily life and city environment, I highly encourage you to visit this site. A blog maintained by two friends of mine, together they explore the relationship of plants to their urban enrivonments — from perspectives in Brooklyn and Berlin.
Volunteers for Peace: International Volunteers for Peace offers this amazing database with thousands of volunteer opportunities — trips all over the world and from as short as a week to as long as a year. How great would it be to travel somewhere on your Places To Go list while also giving back to that same place? If you want to go with me sometime, give a shout! What better reason to find ourselves in Thailand...or Africa...or China...or India...
YogaWorks: My current yoga studio, and a place that is shaping much of my NYC life (not to mention mind, heart, and body!).
